No Shop? How Service-Area Businesses Can Rank on Google Maps

Many owners tell me, “I don’t have a shop, so Google Maps isn’t for me.” Not true. If you go to your customers — plumbers, electricians, cleaners, pest control, home tutors, mobile beauticians, movers — you can still have a Google Business Profile and get calls from Maps. Google calls this a service-area business.

Step 1: Set it up the right way

  • Use your real business name — no keywords or city names added.
  • Enter your address for verification, then hide the address if customers don’t visit you there. Showing a home address as a “shop” is a common reason for suspension.
  • Add your service areas — the cities or neighbourhoods you actually cover. Keep them realistic; listing places you never go doesn’t help.

Step 2: Be very clear about what you do

  • Choose a specific primary category (for example “Plumber”, “Pest control service”, “House cleaning service”).
  • List every service with a short description and a starting price if you can.
  • Write a description that says what you do, where, and why customers choose you.

Step 3: Show your work with photos

You don’t have a shop to photograph, so show the work: before-and-after photos, your team in uniform, your van or tools, and finished jobs. Real photos build trust fast. Ask customers if you can photograph the result.

Step 4: Reviews that mention the area

When a happy customer leaves a review, it naturally helps if they mention the service and area (“fixed our AC in Anna Nagar the same day”). Never write it for them — just ask them to share what you did and where.

Step 5: Make it easy to contact you

  • Add a phone number that is always answered — missed calls are lost jobs.
  • Add WhatsApp — many people would rather message (see WhatsApp + Google Maps). My free WhatsApp link generator helps.
  • Have a simple website or page for each main area you serve.

Be patient with distance

Google still uses your verified location to judge distance, so you’ll rank most easily near your base. To reach further areas, build up reviews, photos and area pages over time.

In my Dubai cleaning company case study, a home-service business found new customers its competitors were missing. Want the same for yours? Book a free strategy session.
