When someone types “dentist near me” or “saree shop near me”, Google shows a map with three businesses at the top. Why those three? Google has said it looks at three main things. Once you understand them, it becomes clear what you can and can’t control.
Google checks whether your business is a good match for what the person typed. It looks at:
What you can do: fill in every part of your profile clearly, using the words your customers actually use.
Google looks at how far your business is from the person searching (or from the area they typed, like “saree shop in RS Puram”). This is why your ranking changes depending on where the customer is standing.
What you can do: you can’t move your shop, but you can make sure your address and map pin are exactly right, and build relevance and prominence so you show further away.
Google prefers businesses that look established and trusted. It looks at:
What you can do: keep getting genuine reviews, reply to all of them, and get listed correctly on trusted local directories.
You win “near me” searches by being the clearest match, with an accurate location, and the most trusted profile nearby. In my saree store case study, working on all three brought 1,663 direction requests from Google Maps.
