Google Business Profile Suspended? What to Do (and What Not to Do)

One morning a business owner calls me in a panic: “My shop has disappeared from Google Maps.” Calls have stopped, and customers can’t find directions. Most of the time, the profile has been suspended. The good news: in most cases it can be fixed — if you handle it the right way.

How to know if your profile is suspended

  • Your business no longer shows on Google Maps or in search.
  • When you open your profile, you see a warning such as “Your profile is suspended” or “Your profile is disabled”.
  • You may also get an email from Google about it.

Why profiles get suspended

  • Keywords stuffed in the business name. “Kavya Boutique – Best Saree Shop Coimbatore” instead of just “Kavya Boutique”. This is the most common reason I see.
  • An address Google doesn’t trust. A virtual office, a co-working desk, or a PO box.
  • Showing an address for a service-area business that doesn’t welcome customers at that address.
  • Too many edits at once — changing name, address, phone and categories in one go.
  • Duplicate profiles for the same business at the same location.
  • Fake or paid reviews, or reviews posted from the same device.

What to do, step by step

  1. Don’t panic, and don’t create a new profile. A new profile for the same business usually makes things worse and can lose your old reviews for good.
  2. Fix the cause first. Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your shop board, bills and documents. Remove extra keywords. Make sure the address is a real place where you work.
  3. Collect proof. Keep ready a clear photo of your shop board, a photo of the inside of the shop, a utility bill or rent agreement with the address, and your business registration or GST certificate.
  4. Submit the appeal. Open your profile and follow the link to request a review (appeal). Upload the proof and explain briefly and honestly.
  5. Wait, and don’t keep editing. Reviews can take from a few days to a few weeks. Editing the profile again while it is being reviewed can reset the process.

How to avoid a suspension

  • Use your real business name — no city names or keywords added.
  • Make big changes one at a time, not all together.
  • Ask for reviews honestly from real customers (see my guide on getting more Google reviews).
  • Keep photos of your shop board and entrance on the profile — they help Google trust you.
  • Check your profile once a week so you notice problems early.
